Reserve the space key for moving the cursor
Holding the space key and moving the cursor to the left/right is an immensely helpful function. Most of the time I place the cursor roughly and have to adjust only 1-2 characters though, and holding&swiping makes precise movement of a single character difficult.
What would be very intuitive is to use all gestures starting from the blank key to position the cursor. A short swipe makes a 1 character step (as the backspace already does) a long swipe would do what currently holding&swiping does. Even up and down would be possible this way.
Backwards compatibility could be kept by adding an option for this behaviour.

mAgreed. Right now swipe is backspace and you have to longpress on the spacebar to turn it into a cursor. If you swipe on the spacebar without the long press it's still backspace. When first turned the cursor function on I didn't realize it needed a long press; it just seemed to work wonky. Spacebar gestures for all cursor movement, individual 'clicks' and free movement like a mouse and the basic slidey back and forth for delete seems intuitive and ideal. (Slightly separate topic but swiping as backspace or delete and reverse direction to bring it back would be more convenient and efficient as far as reducing necessary cursor movement)
