Why not construct the keyboard alphabetically, reading horizontally across the page.

The original querty keyboard was designed to slow typists down on an old fashioned typewriter, which we don't need any more. So an alphabetical keyboard would make finding the keys much easier.

This is not true. The QWERTY layout is meant to position all the letters as most accessible as possible.
